By the time the contents of the small intestine have reached the lower end, and are ready to pass into the large intestine, almost all of the food material that is useful to the body has already been absorbed into the blood. What is left over to enter the large intestine is chiefly the indigestible parts of the food. Decomposition takes place in this mass of material as it passes down the large intestine and foul-smelling materials in greater or lesser quantity are produced.
