Nick Lazzarini Talks About His Dance Career With Jigtvcom

Master dance choreographer, Nick Lazzarini speaks with JigTV.com about his life as a professional dancer and offers pointers to aspiring dancers.

As part of it's series of interviews with dancers, the social dance site JigTV.com spoke with choreographer Nick Lazzarini in New York City, where he's been teaching for Jump The Alternative Dance Convention. You may remember Nick as the winner of the very first season of So You Think You Can Dance.

After years of training during his childhood years, Nick had moved to Los Angeles only two years prior to being actually plucked out of a dance class to perform on the hit dance TV series. Dancers were given more immediate dancing challenges in the show's infancy. As an example, Lazzarini had never danced Ballroom style before and was thrust into doing it on the show. "It's funny because now people know what to expect on So You Think You Can Dance, so the kids on the show now are training in ballroom class with their cha-cha heels on four months in advance," he told Chelsea Latimer of JigTV.com. He points out that while the show always has amazing dancers, the first season was more of a "pure" dance show with real dance competition and less of a personality competition.

Nick Lazzarini feels he was accurately represented during his season on So You Think You Can Dance, and acknowledges the boost his career has enjoyed from being on the show. This has included calls for dancing as well as acting, which Nick seems very interested in getting into. His favorite work, however, is company dancing, which he did a lot of with Dee Caspary's dance company.

Lazzarini's career, like those of so many professional dancers, is proof that experience tends to be wide-ranging and those learning to dance must expect to do much more than just one style or one type of work. Nick's advice is to keep taking dance classes and keep dancing. He says that if you love dancing then you can stick through the days when you don't feel like you've got a "leg up."
